Dr Konstantinos (Kostas) Daniel Tsavdaridis is Associate Professor of Structural Engineering in the School of Civil Engineering at the University of Leeds and the Director of 3DMBC. He holds an MEng and a PhD from City, University of London and an MSc (DIC) from Imperial College London. Dr Tsavdaridis is the Leading of the ‘Steel, Composite & Hybrid Structures’ research group (aka KDT research group), and he led the School’s ‘Materials & Structures’ group between 2017 and 2020. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers (FICE), a Chartered Civil Engineer in the UK (CEng) and Europe-FEANI (EUR ING), a Chartered Structural Engineer and Member of the Institution of Structural Engineers (MIStructE), the European Council of Civil Engineers, and a Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (MASCE). Dr Tsavdaridis also worked as a Principle Structural Stress Specialist engineer for Pell Frischmann in London, on developing sophisticated high fidelity computational models for optimising the design of an EPR Nuclear Plant Station developed by AREVA_SIEMENS.
His research expertise is in structural product development that embraces resilience and sustainability; particularly the development of innovative seismic-resistant design of connections, through testing large and full-scale structural systems and using advanced modelling techniques. He has published over 70 journal publications and 100 scientific articles, technical reports and international conference papers.
He is an active member of several standardisation committees: BSI (B/525/9) Structural use of Aluminium, BSI (B/525/8) Structures in Seismic Regions, fib (CEB-FIP, COM7-TG:7.6) Resilient Structures, IStructE – Sustainability Panel, IASS (WG:8) Metal Spatial Structures, and a member of several international scientific committees such as the European Convention for Constructional Steelwork, the International Federation for Structural Concrete, the International Association for Life-Cycle Civil Engineering (IALCCE), the Hellenic Steel Structures Research Society (EEME), the Hellenic Association for Earthquake Engineering (ETAM), and the Hellenic Institute for the Fire Protection of Structures (ELIPYKA).
In 2019, Dr Tsavdaridis was awarded with the prestigious Leverhulme Trust Senior Fellowship from the Royal Academy of Engineering for his work in steel modular construction, followed up by a Royal Society award in 2021 for further expanding on this front and collaborating closely with policy makers to introduce regulation and assist parliamentarians in realising the transformation of the construction sector.
